Comprehensive Sign Plan
Banff Sign Co. took the lead in designing a comprehensive sign plan for the prestigious Kananaskis Nordic Spa at the Kananaskis Pomeroy Mountain Lodge. The first of its kind in Alberta the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is a purpose built 50,000 sq. ft. contemporary indoor-outdoor facility. Designed around a hydrotherapy cycle that has been popular in Scandinavian cultures for generations the temperatures in the five outdoor pools and six sauna and steam cabins are carefully monitored and maintained. Surrounded by the Canadian Rockies in the heart of Kananaskis Country the Kananaskis Nordic Spa was designed to embrace the beauty of the natural surroundings and offer visitors a one-of-a-kind experience.
Experiential Graphic Design
Our team plunged into planning and designing a comprehensive sign plan that reflected the natural landscape around the spa. Live edge pine was sourced and integrated into the signage design as the backing material for all interior wayfinding and exterior pool information signs. Because the temperatures are updated daily we chose black pearl slate inlays as a natural chalkboard. Slate brings prestige and retains a beautiful appearance while providing amazing durability. The spa experience may be popular in Scandinavian cultures but the Canadian influence at the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is first and foremost. The maple leaf tartan was used as a common design element throughout the entire facility. Everything from the floor directory signs to the over sized custom wood washroom signs displayed this national emblem of Canada. The four colours reflect the maple leaf as it changes through the seasons – gold in the early autumn, red at the first frost, brown after falling and green in the spring. With rejuvenation being key component of the spa’s experience we couldn’t think of a better symbol to guide visitors from around the world through this unique Canadian attraction.
Team Effort
Banff Sign Company worked directly with the VP of Spa & Development to build a comprehensive sign plan that was clear and concise to guide international visitors through the many steps of the hydrotherapy cycle. This approach granted more creative freedom to our team of talented designers. Alongside the general contractor we successfully planned, fabricated and installed an extensive collection of signage over three different phases of construction.
